Samsung S8500 Wave leaks again, reveals dazzling specs

Posted on 15 February 2010 by admin

That first Bada-running handset by Samsung is certainly impatient to go public. After we saw it advertised on billboards yesterday, it now made a live appearance and revealed a large part of its specs sheet.

Apparently the Samasung S8500 Wave would be a pretty well spec’d handset with its 1 GHz CPU. Its 5 megapixel autofocus camera may not sound like much but the 720p video recording certainly is something. A tempered glass will protect the 3.3” AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display.

The list of noteworthy features of the Samsung S8500 Wave continues with 2GB of internal memory, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi connectivity supporting the latest n standard and 3G with HSDPA. And all this goodness will be packed in an aluminium body only 10.9mm thick.

We are now only one day away from the Samsung S8500 Wave official announcement, which should take place tomorrow in Barcelona.

Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO review: Pro toolbox

Posted on 22 November 2009 by admin

Introduction

Now that we have the B7610 OmniaPRO running on the much-awaited Windows Mobile 6.5, we’re finally up to speed. Omnia smartphones have a pretty wide reach already and they are known for their WinMo customizations and feature-rich specs sheets. The B7610 OmniaPRO however was the first family member to sport a full hardware keyboard and by the looks of it, Samsung have done a great job.

Side-sliding or not, the B7610 OmniaPRO is definitely a capable device in both hardware and software equipment. The QWERTY keyboard however is a convenience tool usually reserved for the competition’s high-end offerings, so you can bet the OmniaPRO will have to tackle some really capable contenders. But you can easily tell, it a tough nut to crack as well.

Samsung B7610 Omnia Pro official photos

  • GPS receiver with A-GPS
  • Built-in accelerometer for UI auto-rotate and turn-to-mute
  • TV out functionality
  • Nice audio output quality

Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO
Samung B7610 OmniaPRO at ours

Who is the OmniaPRO is a multiple choice question. And there is more than one correct answer. The original Omnia has produced such an offspring choosing names became a problem. They even had to name one of the kids after the uncle. If you’ve been keeping track, you’d know the OmniaPRO has an Armani-branded alter-ego – the B7620. But well, Giorgio was lucky. The B7610 OmniaPRO less so.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with the name except that there are another couple of Pros in the family. And perhaps too many of them in other houses.

We’ve never had a doubt about the quality of the Omnia genes but such a strong and versatile lineup perhaps exceeds the most optimistic scenarios. Samsung are obviously not only trying to update their portfolio but confront their key market rivals by matching competing devices spec for spec.

The B7610 OmniaPRO will be engaging the enemy on the high end of the performance and pricing scale. And that’s where even the smallest details count. The B7610 doesn’t have a unique defining feature like the Omnia HD to give it an edge against some unforgiving rivals. So, it will have to squeeze every bit of performance out of its system. It can count though on Samsung’s solid record in multimedia and interface customization.

Speaking of which, the custom-made TouchWiz looks and feels better than ever. So much that it’s worth the spoiler. And the mode switch for toggling Work and Leisure is keen to make a point that this here Pro knows good fun too.

So, the B7610 OmniaPRO will be trying to make its mark. And so will be Windows Mobile yet again. Because the OmniaPRO is certainly not running against PocketPCs only – the competition’s finest will stand on its way. That’s Symbian, and Android, and Maemo.

Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica gets official, packs 800Mhz CPU

Posted on 24 October 2009 by admin

Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica, or Galaxy Lite, if you prefer, is official as it gets. Not only is the I5700 the fastest gun in the Android crowd with its 800MHz CPU, but it’s also cheaper than the original Samsung Galaxy. But let’s start from the basics – the Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica has been sitting in our rumor mill section for a while now and it seemed to be the baby brother of I7500 Galaxy, which we reviewed just recently. The “Galaxy Lite” certainly seemed to suggest it. The CPU is interesting because the original Galaxy ran the 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7200A processor. But with 800MHz the Spica beats even the Acer Liquid, which until now held the crown for speediest CPU in the Android world – a 768MHz Snapdragon. Liquid still has a lead in RAM – 256MB – versus the 128 of both Galaxy phones. Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica (aka Galaxy Lite) Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica (aka Galaxy Lite) Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica (aka Galaxy Lite) Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica (aka Galaxy Lite) Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica (aka Galaxy Lite) Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica (aka Galaxy Lite) is official The rest of the features are very close to those of I7500 Galaxy, save for the lack of internal memory and the camera. Galaxy Spica comes with a 3.2MP camera and support for microSD cards up to 32GB instead. The display is the same size at 3.2″ (though the press release is mum about whether it’s AMOLED and capacitive or not) as is the battery of 1,500mAh. The I5700 is a “Google experience” phone, so it’s connected to Google’s services. The Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica will be available in Russia in November for 1,4000 rubles (320 euro or 480 dollars). There’s no word on availability in other locations but it shouldn’t be long now. Source (press release is in Russian)

12MP 3x optical zoom Samsung M8920 shows up again

Posted on 27 September 2009 by admin

We just came upon another leaked photos of what seems to be the successor of the Samsung Pixon12. This time however it’s the Korean version of the monster cameraphone dubbed Samsung SCH-W880. The information about the specs list is still pretty scarce but the camera alone to make us drool.

Four months ago the first evidence of the existence of a Pixon12 successor with optical zoom popped up in the net. It was a picture of the Samsung M8920, which sported 3x optical zoom and HD video recording.

We now have some good news for our Korean buddies who will also be getting a piece of the action. It appears that Samsung is planning to launch a Korean version of the 12MP handset that should go by the name SCH-W880. The visual differences to the European model are almost non-existent or at least as far as the back panel is concerned. The camera zoomlens the xenon and LED flashes and the grip are all there. We do notice however that there are no Wi-Fi/GPS marks on W880, suggesting that those features might missing in this version.

We haven’t got confirmation of any of the other specs of the device, but those leaked shots should help make the waiting for the official announcement more easily bearable.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness live photos make it online

Posted on 05 September 2009 by admin

The attention-grabbing Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness posed for an extensive photo shoot, showing off its one of a kind screen. Transparent screens that have so far been the stuff of concept renderings are now coming to a store near you.

We’ve seen the concepts (take the Nokia Morph for example), but at best we see them in some new techno-thriller. With the LG GD900 Crystal, LG also used transparency as a design element but it simply used existing technology in a creative way. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness on the other hand borrows technology from the future.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness is a pure show-off

The XPERIA Pureness promises to bring some fresh blood and luxury into the XPERIA brand. With its transparent screen and sleek, minimalistic design, it’s set to tackle luxury phones, while its XPERIA X2 and X3 cousins take aim at high-end have-it-all phones.

More photos of the XPERIA Pureness

This is the first attempt and the screen of the XPERIA Pureness has some limitations – the screen is small and is only monochrome. It’s not all bad however, from the photos it seems that it has pretty good contrast and viewing angles. We don’t know what the screen resolution is and how it fares under direct sunlight is also a mystery.

Yet more photos

In the next iteration, the problem of size will probably be solved and figuring out how to add color support shouldn’t be too hard, should it? From there, adding touch input capabilities is a piece of cake, since the technology has been around for quite a while now. Oops, sorry! We got carried away daydreaming, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness is expected to launch in November for a rumored posh price of 699 euro (1000 dollars).

Samsung S3650 Corby now official

Posted on 01 September 2009 by admin

The Samsung S3650 Corby just got official and it’s dressed to impress with its Fashion Jackets and ready for a night out, partying in social networks. With a price tag of 150 euro and attractive design, Corby aims to be affordable and appealing to the young audience.

The basic specs are reminiscent of the Samsung S5230 Star, but Corby maintains its own identity very well. Starting off with the physical dimension of the S3650, it’s 103 x 56.5 x 12.0 mm big and weighs 93 grams. Packed in that compact shell are a 2.8″ QVGA capacitive touchscreen (yes, capacitive) and a 2-megapixel camera.

MP3 player, microSD card slot for cards up to 8GB and a FM radio with RDS keep the S3650 rocking, and the WMV support is a really nice touch. A USB port and Bluetooth 2.1 will aid in loading up the phone with music from your computer, but unfortunately, the USB port is the proprietary Samsung one.

The Samsung S3650 is a globetrotter with its quad-band GSM and EDGE support, thought it’s not the speediest one – it’s 2G only. The 960-mAh battery should give it good standby and talk time numbers though nothing official was quoted.

On the social side, Samsung Corby offers Facebook, MySpace and Twitter integration and the list goes on. YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and Photobucket are Corby’s playground as well. You can update your status on the various social networking sites and receive updates from your friends via a simple pop-up notification feature.

The Samsung S3650 also incorporates a lot of the know-how that went into the likes of the Samsung Jet, like one finger zoom, smart unlock and as with any recent touch-based phone from Samsung – TouchWiz user interface and a great deal of widgets. It also offers something called Cartoon UI, which is described as “a highly stylised graphical menu and wallpaper that adapts according to handset functionality”.

One of the main things that Samsung hopes will attract people to the Corby (aside from its bargain price point) is the interchangeable back covers. The S3650 is available in bright colors, Jamaican Yellow, Cupid Pink, Minimal White, and Festival Orange (with more to come in the future), but can get fancy too. Included in the box will be two additional back covers – the Fashion Jackets.

Corby’s front is black, and it’s the back that receives the vivid color treatment. One of the Fashion Jackets is black, making the entire phone black (and black is elegant, right?), while the other one is more interesting – a unique pattern design color.

The Samsung S3650 Corby will be available in Europe from mid-September for about 150 euro (215 US dollars). No word on its availability outside Europe just yet.

Samsung’s Star shines bright: Five million units sold since May

Posted on 28 August 2009 by admin

Well, well, if it isn’t the year of the affordable touchscreen bar – the Samsung S5230 Star sold over 5 million units since its introduction in May. And Samsung expect that number to reach 10 million by November.

Ambitious? Definitely! But the S5230 Star was the fastest Samsung handset in reaching the 5 million mark and if you look at the numbers of units sold month per month – 10 million seems entirely within reach.

In its premiere month of May the Star sold 700 thousand units, 900 thousand the next month and the numbers for July and August were nearly double that – 1.6 and 1.8 million respectively. The Star’s rival, the LG Cookie, also reached the 5-million milestone in July but it had a head start of several months. It too is foreseen by its creators to reach 10 million sales soon.

Europe is the biggest importer of the Samsung Star, with more than half of the units sold there (2.8 million). It topped the sales lists in France, the UK, the Netherlands and Italy.

It seems that the Samsung S5230 Star has the right formula for success – light on the cost and heavy on the features. It offers a 3″ WQVGA touchscreen with Samsung’s widget-enabled TouchWiz and a 3 megapixel camera with smile detection. It can handle microSD cards up to 16GB and with DNSe technology it’s a music player in its own right. The document viewer doesn’t hurt either.

We are not quite fans of the design but those new optional colors seem to liven up things around that Star – hit the source link below to check out the new paintjobs.

Samsung S8000 Jet review: Airborne

Posted on 28 July 2009 by admin

It’s that time of the year and the living is easy: pool parties, blockbuster movies and new gadgets. The Samsung S8000 Jet sure knows good timing and gallantly promises a bit of everything – style, entertainment and impressively light and lively handling. It’s a thing to show off to your friends and help you enjoy and capture the hot moments of the season.

The S8000 Jet is not exactly jet set stuff but claims a big piece of the touchscreen action. And it knows who it needs to kill to get it. The Jet is the direct and brave answer to the LG KM900 Arena and boy isn’t it a tough call between these two. The S8000 Jet has the fancy 3D interface upgrade, 5MP camera with D1 recording, Wi-Fi, GPS and all the stuff to put this touchscreen phone in the desirable category. We have a thriller of a local derby and the high-end contenders need to do everything and do it well.

Samsung S8000 Jet offical photos

We were impressed in our preview with the new visual upgrades of the TouchWiz interface, which combine the best part of the 3D LG cube and page-organized iPhone menus. But now it’s time for the final and deciding round with the Samsung S800 Jet.

Here is the full ammo of the S8000 Jet, along with what might be the deal breakers.

Key features

  • 3.1″ 16M-color resistive AMOLED touchscreen of 800 x 480 pixel resolution
  • 800 MHz processor
  • 5 megapixel auto focus camera with dual-LED
  • Geotagging, image stabilization, face detection, Smile Shot, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)
  • Latest TouchWiz 2.0 UI with Motion UI, Media Gate 3D, Smart Unlock
  • Quad-band GSM support and 3G with HSDPA 3.6 Mbps and HSUPA support
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPS receiver
  • 2 / 8 GB onboard storage
  • microSD card slot with microSDHC support
  • Built-in accelerometer for screen auto rotate and turn-to-mute
  • Proximity sensor for display auto turn-off
  • TV out
  • 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS
  • microUSB port and stereo Bluetooth v2.0
  • Web browser has full Flash and Java support
  • DivX/XviD video support
  • DNSe and SRS sound effect
  • Smart dialing
  • Speaker Call

Main disadvantages

  • No smartphone capabilities
  • microSD slot is under the back cover
  • Smart dialing only works for numbers, not contact names
  • No preinstalled GPS navigation software

As the specs suggest, the Samsung S8000 Jet is nothing short of a multimedia monster. The picture is complete with full Flash support – still quite a rarity among today’s handsets – DivX/XviD video codecs and great music package. The camera is a high-end snapper with premium features that the LG Arena doesn’t have, while the Smart Unlock, Speaker Call and Motion UI just add to its uniqueness.
